Travis Cook

Music Director

Travis Cook is a native of Farmington Hills and was privileged to grow up as part of the rich musical tradition of Metro-Detroit.  He holds degrees in Music Education and Trombone Performance from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.  He continued his education at the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, where he earned a Master’s Degree in Trombone Performance.

Travis is currently the Director of Bands at Trenton High School where he directs the Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, and Trojan Marching Band.  Travis is also an active performer; he is the bandleader and lead trombone of the Swing Syndicate Big Band as well as an active freelance musician in Metro Detroit.  Travis was appointed Music Director of the Troy Metro Symphony Orchestra at the conclusion of a successful trial season in 2022/2023.  Under his leadership, the orchestra has seen growth in members, increased quality of musicianship, and engaging collaboration with other artists and arts organizations.

Dr. Jon Busch

Assistant Music Conductor

Jon Busch, a longtime Southfield resident, holds degrees in Euphonium Performance from Cornerstone University, Wind Instruments (Brass) from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. in Music Education from Oakland University. He performs on euphonium with the DSO Detroit Community Concert Band, the Southeastern Michigan Wind Ensemble and the Farmington Concert Band, where he also serves as substitute and guest conductor as needed.

Jon is known for his expressive conducting style and his passion for helping performers and audiences form meaningful, transformative connections with music. He recently retired after 42 years of teaching, including 36 years at Southfield Christian School. Active in church music as both a vocal and instrumental musician, Jon previously served at Highland Park Baptist (now Graceway Bible) in Southfield and currently serves at Ward Church in Northville. He is delighted to join the TMSO family this season.
